“Hello, I’m a PC” “And I’m also a PC” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
So, if you’re over the age of 18, chances are you probably remember the string of Mac ads that Apple ran back in the mid-late 2000’s, Mac vs PC.
Well, that ad campaign may be a thing of the past, but it probably exists in the fuzzy memories of anyone alive at the time. And that’s probably what Intel was banking on when they hired Justin Long (Mac, in those commercials) for their Go PC ad campaign. And here, he… just introduces himself as Justin. Not to say he’s not acting, though; given the number of clear digs at Apple that were clearly worked into the scripts.
It is worth noting that the dislikes outweigh the likes on all of these by ~200. That said, there are probably a few reasons for that. The first, obviously, being Mac fanboys downvoting it. But the less obvious might be due to the current state of Intel.
To put it bluntly, this gen hasn’t been terribly kind to them. Aside from the fact that their competition has been gaining on them, they’ve experienced delays, as well as the fact that last year saw Apple move away from Intel chips in favor of their own ARM-based development. Which, coincidentally, has done fairly well for Apple.
And then, this is merely the latest move in Intel’s campaign. Last month saw the release of this video (below), trying desperately to sell laptops to the Rocket League crowd (since the game ceased MacOS support last year).
While I doubt that Intel’s going to fade into irrelevance like some might imply (see: every tech writer beieving that physical media will die next year… for the past 20 years), there’s no doubt that they’ve taken a few blows recent of late. But hey, you gotta take a fall before you get your redemption arc, right?
Also, it’s not like it’s the first time we’ve seen actors from one ad campaign switch sides, after all.
