In what Warner Bros must have thought was a very surprising move, they’ve confirmed that the still-untitled Man of Steel sequel will lead into a Justice League movie, which has been pretty obvious to anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Justice League. Man of Steel 2: The Secret of the Ooze already has Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg, so it’s pretty much a JLA movie already. It’s good that they’re jamming all that into one movie; there’s no way it will feel overstuffed, and it’s smart to skip all the pesky universe-building that Marvel engaged in prior to The Avengers.
Also from the duh department is the news that Zack Snyder will direct both Man of Steel 2 as well as Justice League.
But here’s something actually surprising: Warner Bros reportedly has Matt Damon in mind to play Aquaman, which is not going to happen for several reasons.
First of all, Matt Damon is a goddamn Oscar winner who wouldn’t touch the role of Aquaman with a ten-foot pole, even if it meant working with Ben Affleck again. Um, Damon and Affleck aren’t work buddies who only see each other at the office, they’re lifelong friends. They don’t need an excuse to hang out.
Second, Aquaman sucks. Hard. I’m sure Justice League‘s version would be a little more hard-edged than the toothless Super Friends iteration, but the point remains. Over the last few years, DC has taken pains to redeem Aquaman (they gave him a beard, which honestly does help things). Whenever anyone is trying to convince you “No, Aquaman is totally badass now!” they will, without fail, bring up this image:
Which, yeah, cool. But the role is tainted. If DC announced a gritty reboot of the Wonder Twins and got Andy Serkis to play Gleek, it doesn’t mean people will be lining up out the door to play fucking Zan and Jayna.
This post kinda got away from me. Here’s the gist of it: WB wants Matt Damon to play Aquaman, which I put at about a 1% likelihood. It will most likely be Jason Momoa, who was rumored for the role a while ago (as well as the role of Martian Manhunter). Justice League will be out in 2018.
