Justice League Cinematographer “Cried All the Way Through” Joss Whedon’s Cut Of The Film

Justice League

The more I looked things up, the funnier it got.

Recently, Comic Book Debate asked the cinematographer for Justice League, Fabian Wagner, what his thoughts were on the movie, specifically Joss Whedon’s cut. Wagner had been hired on by Zack Snyder, who left the project after personal family tragedy. Wagner was not involved, however, with Whedon’s reshoots, and that is the crux of his problem with it.

When asked for his thoughts on the film:

It’s really hard to say because I was watching it and I think I was crying all the way through. So it’s hard for me to say exactly how much was changed, but a lot was changed. It looked very different, and it’s sad for me because I loved working with Zack. I had the best time of my life.

There were many other things on that movie that made it so good apart from the fact that I was working with Zack and the whole gang. I met my wife on that job. There [were] a lot of other things. It was just a great shoot, and so it was a shame to see the film the way it turned out to be.

Now, Justice League wasn’t the only big thing Wagner has worked on. He directed photography on three 2012 episodes of Sherlock. And, hey, he was the cinematographer on Overlord, which I heard was pretty decent. Also Victor Frankenstein, which, uh, yeah. But it’s his credits on Game of Thrones that are really doing it for me; he had two episodes in each season (series for those across the pond) for seasons 4, 5, 6 and, notably, 8. Can you guess which two?

If you guessed The Long Night (3) and The Bells (5), congratulations! The Long Night in particular making me look sideways at the man, because it’s so goddamn dark. And I wasn’t streaming that shit, it was just dark. I had flashbacks to trying to play Circle of the Moon with nothing but one of those screen shield lights back in the day.

I don’t know. I’m just not a big fan of the cult of Snyder. I kind of have a hard time believing that the “Snyder cut” of this movie would’ve been any better than Man of Steel or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
