Died age 75 ahead of extradition to U.S.
McAfee Antivirus founder John McAfee has died.
He committed suicide in his prison cell in Barcelona, Spain. Guards found him hanging in his cell, according to Reuters as well as a local newspaper.
His death in his cell is notable, as it occurred just after the Spanish high court approved his extradition to the United States for tax evasion, as well as some tax-related cryptocurrency charges and a potential crypto “pump-and-dump” scheme (which sounds dirtier than it is… for a crime). Allegedly, he bought cryptocurrencies on the cheap, used his social media influence to raise their profile through his followers, then sold them off for a massive increase.
McAfee was notable, aside from the worst antivirus software on the market being his namesake, for basically being some kind of Far Cry villain in real life. Also important is the fact that he hadn’t been involved with the company he founded since the 90’s; in fact, before the modern internet raised the value of antivirus programs as a whole, and certainly before the company with his name on it became synonymous with crap. As he noted in a video released in 2013, which featured him snorting cocaine off a hooker’s ass and then blasting a laptop with McAfee antivirus on it with a handgun.
