When I heard that they were making a Jem and the Holograms film I got pretty excited about it. While I wasn’t a huge fan of the series as a kid –I was too busy watching Transformers– as I got older I appreciated what the show did. I was so excited about this new project that I got into the new comic book run, going so far to snag the box set of issue one and two with all the variant covers.
Everything was going swimmingly until I saw this trailer late last night. Nothing about this film has anything to do with Jem and the Holograms outside of the name. No kooky powers or transformations, no sign of their evil counterparts, no Iron Man style HOLOGRAM like in the new series, in fact, nothing really screams Jem outside of the makeup. It seems that the team involved took a story that had a lot of potential to be a great film that could empower girls and turn it into what looks like a generic CW inspired teenage love story.
