According to Entertainment Weekly, there’s going to be a new Ghostbusters film, set in the original film’s universe And Jason Reitman, the son of the original movie’s Director Ivan Reitman, will be directing (and co-writing) it.
I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.

Sony Pictures has the film penciled in for a 2020 release, with production starting in the next few months. There aren’t any story or cast details, but it’s not hard to imagine that they’ll try to get as many of the original cast back as possible. Reitman is co-writing the script with Gil Kenan (Monster House, Poltergeist [2015]).
This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.
– Jason Reitman
Reitman’s made quite the career for himself outside his father’s shadow. He’s been nominated for an Oscar twice (Up In The Air, Juno). And, shortly after his first film, Thank You For Smoking, he was frequently asked in interviews if he’d direct a Ghostbusters sequel. At the time, he turned the idea down. That said, he idolized his father’s work, and was as big on Ghostbusters as any kid that grew up in the 80’s.
I love everything about it. The iconography. The music. The tone. I remember being on set and seeing them try out the card catalog gag for the first time when the library ghost makes them come flying out. I remember the day they killed Stay Puft and I brought home a hardened piece of foam that just sat on a shelf for years. I was scared there was a terror dog underneath my bed before people knew what a terror dog was.

Jason, his sister, and his mother had a scene in the first film playing panicked residents evacuating the Shandor building, but the scene was cut for time. Jason did, however, get a line in the 1989 sequel, calling Ray and Winston “full of crap”:
Jason had thought of making a film in the franchise for quite some time, even going back to the beginning of his career as a filmmaker. And now that he is, his famous father (who will produce the movie) is touched his son is taking part in the franchise.

It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.
Sony is also working on an animated Ghostbusters film. That, however, will come out after this live-action film. And it’s being worked on by a different team. So there’s no telling what or who it’ll be about.
