Disney has reinstated James Gunn as the writer/director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, starting with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The news comes from someone with inside on the project speaking to Yahoo’s The Wrap.
Disney dumped Gunn from the franchise last July, when old tweets of his surfaced joking about rape and pedophilia. Despite a public apology, Disney removed him from the project, effectively leaving it at a standstill.
In the intervening time, Gunn was hired by Warner Bros. to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad. But, according to the same source as above, the decision to rehire Gunn was supposedly made months ago after a few conversations. On Twitter, Gunn announced the news today.
Gunn will finish The Suicide Squad before working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Production on The Suicide Squad is set to begin this September, with a premiere on August 6, 2021.
