Stephen King is pretty in vogue right now, I guess. CBS has their dumpster fire Under the Dome, “The Things They Left Behind” is being adapted into a series (when it should really just be a standalone film), and Lifetime is airing Big Driver next month. Now the increasingly ubiquitious J.J. Abrams wants in on the fun, as it’s been announced that his Bad Robot production company will adapt King’s 2011 novel 11/22/63 for Hulu.
Here’s a plot synopsis, via EmpireOnline:
King’s book, which hit shelves in 2011, follows 35-year-old high school English teacher Jake Epping, who becomes obsessed with John F. Kennedy’s assassination and finds a way to travel back in time so he can try to prevent the shooting in 1960s Dallas. The tome was originally headed to the big screen with Jonathan Demme involved, but hasn’t managed to escape development limbo.
I loved 11/22/63. It combined two of my favorite things to read about, time travel and the JFK assassination, and did so with aplomb. Weirdly enough, it’s also the book that convinced me to be a school teacher (that, and a lifelong hatred of money). I trust Abrams with the material (although Friday Night Lights vet Bridget Carpenter will handle showrunning duties). I mean, it can’t be worse than Under the Dome, but then again, nothing can be worse than Under the Dome.
