Ivan Reitman leaves Ghostbusters III

Well, there won’t be something strange happening in Ivan Reitman’s neighborhood any time soon, as the director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II has officially left the long-gestating third movie. Ghostbusters III has been plagued with problems for years, and this is just the latest one. Here’s a brief timeline:

1. Bill Murray (aka Dr. Peter Venkman) receives the script for Ghostbusters III, written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (additional script work has been done by The Office‘s Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupinsky, as well as Tropic Thunder and Idiocracy co-writer Etan Cohen), and reportedly shreds it

2. Harold Ramis (aka Dr. Egon Spengler) passes away earlier this year

3. Ivan Reitman ditches the movie, forcing us to consider the dire prospect of a third Ghostbusters movie directed by someone new and featuring only Ray and Winston

Making a new Ghostbusters movie isn’t a terrible idea. I picture an older Ray and Winston, closing up shop after the death of Egon and the retirement of Venkman. But then they get the idea to train a group of new Ghostbusters, and hand the reins to actors like Paul Rudd and Bill Hader. Put someone like Paul Feig in charge of that and I’d be all for it. Or get Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep, John Dies at the End) to do Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent.

Would I love to see the Ghostbusters back on screen? Of course. But not like this.
