Intellivision Entertainment has plans to once again enter the hardware market, though not necessarily in direct competition with the major market. They’ve announced the Intellivision Amico, a family-focused hardware unit that plans to bring Intellivision’s classics, and more (exclusives, that is), into the 21st century.
The Amico is aiming to cost consumers somewhere between $150-180 USD, with a projected release date of October 10, 2020. As it’s aimed at families, all of its games will be rated E or E10+. All of these games are said to cost around $3 -$8, at the most, and won’t feature any paid DLC or in-game purchases.
All of the classic games for the console will feature a modern spit shine: updated graphics and audio, additional levels, multi-player modes (both on- and offline), and more. The console comes with a few baked in games, and the store will provide 20 brand new games at launch.
While specs haven’t been announced, the Amico unit is said to have “State of the Art 21st Century 2D Image Processing and Graphics Capability,” as well as the sort of modern conveniences you’d expect. Wi-fi and ethernet connectivity, HDMI output, multiple USB ports, and even a means for expansion in the future. The controllers are a throwback to the original Intellivision’s paddles, though they’re packing more under the hood. They’re bluetooth connected, and both sport force feedback, color touchscreens, a gyroscope and accelerometer, a speaker and a microphone, and QI charging.
We are creating a console that parents WANT to buy, not that they were asked to buy. Most every game being made for the home consoles these days is created with only the hardcore gamer in mind. We see a world where everyone is interested in playing at home and with friends.

Right out of the gate, it’s far more promising (and less sketch) than the Atari VCS. But the proof in the pudding is in the eating, as they say, and the Intellivision Amico is a good 2 years off. That said, the trailer features some excellent people on the team, so I’m not worried. Though I can’t help but wonder if the console will get that classic: Color a Dinosaur.
