Instagram thots are a pretty big thing. Just jump into the search and you’ll be inundated with scantily clad models and offers to join their “premium snapchat” or shilling their lewds/nudes to eager people. Amongst that you’ll also find tons of meme pages that generally repost super edgy memes and videos of all sorts of wild nonsense. And don’t even get me started on the whole fetish side of Instagram that one could write a thesis on.
But it seems that Instagram has had enough of that and wants to get back to focusing, or at least filtering, people towards more wholesome content. Instgram stated that. “We have begun reducing the spread of posts that are inappropriate but do not go against Instagram’s Community Guidelines.”
So even if your content isn’t breaking the rules set by Instagram, if might be breaking their made-up moral code of conduct. Sexually suggestive posts will get demoted, same goes for memes that they consider in bad taste. So, if your page has experienced the dreaded “shadow ban” this is probably why.
Instagram says, “this type of content may not appear for the broader community in Explore or hashtag pages,” meaning those that depend on views to make their bread and butter on the platform are going to be affected. The company went on to note that, “We’ve started to use machine learning to determine if the actual media posted is eligible to be recommended to our community.”
The issue now is that users won’t actually know if their content has been affected or is being filtered from search, even when using hashtags. Creators also don’t currently have any guidelines on what Instagram considers “borderline content” so it’s pretty much a guessing game at this point for creators.
