INK CONSOLE: an Open-Source E-Ink Console for Text Adventures

A handheld e-reader displaying text and illustrations for an interactive story titled "Grand Houdini," set in a theater.

Independent manufacturer and creative developer Singular 9 is set to launch a CrowdSupply campaign on March 1 to fund INK CONSOLE, an open-source portable system for text-based games. Combining the simplicity of an e-reader with the interactivity of a game console, INK CONSOLE looks to redefine storytelling by transforming reading into an immersive, choose-your-own-adventure experience.

INK CONSOLE blends the charm of classic computer games like Zork I and the beloved Choose Your Own Adventure book series into a sleek, modern device. At key moments in the story, players are prompted to make choices that shape their journey, creating a dynamic and personalized narrative. The console’s e-ink screen and slim design make it both portable and easy on the eyes, while its intuitive interface includes features like an inventory system and health status tracker for added depth and strategy.

The platform also encourages creativity with its “YOU CREATE” Development Kit, designed for writers, artists, and game designers of all skill levels. This toolkit provides everything needed to craft interactive Gamebooks without requiring coding expertise, opening the door for anyone to create and share their own stories.

Dana, the founder of INK CONSOLE, explains the inspiration behind the project:

Dana is currently developing a variety of concept Gamebooks, ranging from thrilling expeditions and deep-sea adventures to sci-fi epics and fantasy realms. New stories can be easily added via the console’s built-in SD card reader.

An e-ink display shows a digital adventure game scene titled "The Volcano," featuring a dark cave with a railway and a low health indicator.

With its innovative approach to storytelling, INK CONSOLE aims to captivate both readers and creators alike. Whether you’re diving into a pre-written adventure or crafting your own, this unique platform promises to make storytelling more interactive, engaging, and accessible than ever before.

Stay tuned for the CrowdSupply campaign launch on March 1 and be part of the next evolution in interactive storytelling!
