Welp, pour yourselves a stiff drink. IGN has just acquired Humble Bundle. Which sounds really good if you remember their tenure with Direct2Drive. And GameSpy. Fuck it, IGN and Ziff Davis are Grim Reapers for good things.
Thankfully, it seems that IGN is going to finally be reasonable and take a hands-off approach to the whole thing:
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The idea is just to feed them with the resources they need to keep doing what they’re doing.
– IGN Executive Vice President Mitch Galbraith, sharpening his scythe while giving a statement to Gamasutra
Humble Bundle, on the other hand, seems happy with the deal:
We chose IGN because they really understand our vision, share our passion for games, and believe in our mission to promote awesome digital content while helping charity. I can’t think of a better partner than IGN to help Humble Bundle continue our quest.
We will be working harder than ever to bring you the best gaming bundles, book bundles, and store sales, while nurturing the Humble Monthly and our new publishing initiative. We will keep our own office, culture, and amazing team with IGN helping us further our plans. We will raise even more money for charity.
– Jeffrey Rosen, Co-Founder and CEO of Humble Bundle, performing an impressive handstand so that he can speak out of his ass
Honestly, though, did they need it? They already seemed to be doing fairly well; they are the gold standard for bundle sites. And one really has to wonder how long this arrangement will retain its form. You kind of worry about someone from IGN getting a wild hair up their ass and think they can do the whole Humble Bundle thing better. Oh well, I guess we should prepare for the Humble Asskissery Bundle.
Either way, judging by the notes on Jeffrey’s blog post, plenty of people are already jumping ship on their Humble Bundle accounts. They know what’s up. And so, probably, do you.
