“As one of the biggest mysteries in the MARVEL UNIVERSE unfolds, DAREDEVIL assembles a squad of uncanny detectives to track down Wolverine”

I’m at a loss trying to explain why on earth Daredevil of all people is tasked with tracking down a newly resurrected Wolverine. Look, I love Daredevil and think he’s fantastic, but the story just doesn’t make any sense. He has no deep connection to Wolverine and is a character essentially relegated to a few city blocks, something the books jokes with at one point as this is a global sort of event.

The book spins it that the X-Men really want an outsider to take a stab at tracking down Wolverine now that he’s back, but to be honest,  I can think off a dozen other heroes and teams in the Marvel universe better equipped for the job than Daredevil. In that regard, Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost sees our man in red put together one such team to help track down Wolverine made up of an interesting bunch of people. Well, just three people to be exact.

We already know all of this…

The problem lies in the fact that the group is just so weird, even in terms of the comic book world. The writing for everyone is actually on point and interesting, while the art has this gritty look and feel that fits the world of Daredevil. The problem is that something about the two things don’t quite work when they come together. You have flying cars and motorcycles that sort of take away from the impact of some pretty deep moments of character building.

Another problem is that, like the return of Wolverine book I covered last week, nothing of importance happens. Yet again we get a book that simply brings another team together to go hunting for the dead X-Man. Heck, if it wasn’t for the flying car and motorcycle bit there would be nothing here of any importance to anything. It’s simply Daredevil asking people to join his team and they responding “Yeah, that’s cool,” more or less.

The only thing the book does that’s actually interesting is bringing in the mutant Cypher. I haven’t followed the X-Men series in years so I don’t know where he’s been, but the idea that, you know, the X-Men didn’t go looking for him to help, or that he was just living in New Jersey is sort of confusing. I’m going to guess there’s a good reason for this and explained in some other book I need to buy, but as a new reader I’m pretty lost.

This just looks so weird.

This is only exacerbated by the fact that Daredevil makes it clear that this hunt for Wolverine is a sort of “All hands on deck,” situation for the X-Men. That makes it a even weirder that the mutant X-Man that can communicate with with anything isn’t high on their list of people to get on the job. This little threesome just feels a little bit off and features characters Marvel probably wants to get some focus on for later events outside this arc.

I’m really afraid that this hunt for Wolverine thing is going to be mostly team building for all these separate books only to have the core X-Men find him without much help. I really can’t believe that Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost is only the first tie-in with this crossover event and that I’m already bored of it. That’s never a good thing.

“Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost does nothing to forward the plot of this event in any way shape or form.”

Final Score:

2/5
