Holy Diver resurrected with new Collector’s Edition cartridge

Three decades is a long wait, but finally IREM’s cult classic Holy Diver is heading West. Later this month you’ll be able to get your hands on the game in a limited edition collector’s package from the fine folks over at Retro-Bit and their new publishing division.

You’d think that 30-years later they’d just pump out the Japan only game on Steam with English translations, with a release on consoles down the road. That would make sense, and many have gone that route, but not Retro-bit.

The Holy Diver Collector’s Edition releases the game as it was always intended –in an NES cartridge for play on that old gray toaster. Oh, and there are also a ton of extras if that wasn’t enough for you.

For those of you not in the know, Holy Diver is an inventive mix of fast-paced action and adventure that Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine called “A fantastic game loaded with hidden surprises” (issue #3, September 1989).

It stars a magic-wielding warrior who is in search of the Royal Coat of the Arms of the Crimson in order to defeat The Black Slayer. Players will need to fight their way through six stages, each with its own unique theme and challenging boss to overcome.
