Harbinger Renegade #2 offers up an interesting and pretty realistic perspective of what is happening in the lives of these tortured and wounded team of teen heroes. You can see which ones are having a harder time dealing with the consequences of their actions, and despite the fact that there is not much action, it’s still a punchy read
The story has a really fast pace through most of the issue, not because of fight scenes, but because of the dynamic dialogues and the job done working with different sides of the same plot at the same time. It may be a little confusing at first, but you just need to pay a bit more attention than usual in order to understand it all.
It’s a hard thing for me to say which one of the characters from Harbinger Renegade #2 will become a favorite, and I don’t want to say Faith, since she already has her own comic book series and a solid fan base, but right now she is the one with the most options in the story. Still, the entire cast is great and easy to connect with depending on your background.
One issue I have is that we haven’t really been given a proper introduction to these characters. I think this is because of the continuity, as the team members already existed in the Valiant universe, but it’s kind of weird, and you do sort of feel like you’re missing something important in the background of the team.
Harbinger Renegade #2 offers a nice mix between different colors with some being very dark and sinister and reminded me of Generation Zero’s style (hey Valiant, I miss that story, hurry up another issue!). There are also some more vivid, vibrant tones like the ones found Bloodshot USA. This sort of mixing of styles works really well and keeps things interesting.
I’d really like to give a shoutout on the great job with the lettering in this issue! That flashback was what the story needed with not as much background as I would have liked, but worse would have been to have nothing, and the use of the lettering during this bit was the right choice.
There were some panels in a few of the pages in Harbinger Renegade #2 where there was so much black that is sometimes becomes a bit overbearing which seems to be a curse this series has to deal with. Granted, it wasn’t wasn’t enough to prevent me from enjoying the story, but just something that bugged me.
Was the wait worth it? Yes, definitely. It could have been a better book, sure, but this one did a darn fine job with some nice details and a pretty interesting story. Harbinger Renegade is still in its early stages, but there is enough here to keep you coming back for more.
