As I expected, Half-Life: Alyx will be a prequel before Gordon gets to City 17 to cause a ruckus. The game is set for release in March of 2020 and will be playable on all PC=based VR devices. That said, if you get in on Valve Index, Valve’s own VR headset, you can score the game for free.
“Alyx Vance and her father Eli secretly mount the resistance to the brutal occupation of Earth by a mysterious alien race known as The Combine. As Alyx, players take the fight to the Combine to save the future of humanity.”

VR isn’t quite ready for primetime in my opinion, but Valve has always shown it’s one to push the limits in pretty much all aspects. Half-Life changed storytelling forever, Half-Life 2 might just be the greatest FPS of all time, and they created Steam to sell games when everyone thought they were crazy. If any studio is going to push VR into the the stage it’s going to be Valve.
What’s interesting about Half-Life: Alyx is that it’s billed as a full-length experience designed from the ground up for VR. For the most part VR games have really just been mini-games used to supplement an actual series. Think Batman VR and pretty much any VR game tied to an existing franchise. Even amazing VR experiences like Beat Saber are essentially just DDR in VR and not a tradition gaming experience.
Needless to say that if Valve wanted people to get invested in their VR headset this is the perfect way to do it. Every platform needs a killer app and a Half-Life game is about as killer as it gets. The game itself looks incredible and if this brings us closer to Half-Life 3 I’m all for it. More Half-Life is the best Half-Life.
See you all in 12 more years for Half-Life 3!
