Hail Hydra! Captain America reveals he’s always been a Hydra agent

Captain America

“Hail Hydra!” are words we never expected to hear from Captain America, but there you go. In “Captain America: Steve Rogers #1” that is on comic books shelves today, Captain America reveals that he has always been a top-secret agent for Hyrda. It seems that his mother was converted in 1929 and groomed a young Steve Rodgers to be the greatest undercover agent in the history of all time. Silly? Yes. Awesome? Absolutely!

Let’s not pretend that this thing is going to stick and not be retconed or explained in a few issues. We are talking about comics and all this is is a way to create major buzz for Marvel Comics. It should be noted that at the very same time that DC Comics is going through their “Rebirth” which sees a reboot of the entire universe, so this Captain America news is really overshadowing that launch.

Smart move by Marvel, and one that has made national headlines, not because it’s a permanent change, but because the Marvel movies have been so huge. It’s like in wrestling when the babyface goes evil for no reason, only for us to realize that they only did so to infiltrate a faction to tear them down from the inside. Okay… I really need to tone down my WWE watching.

Evil Captain America

The thing about this move that is really going to taint the character is the fact that no matter what Captain America has done in the past, each is going to now forever be tainted by the fact that he’s a Hydra agent. It is now a part of his cannon and that sort of sucks if he doesn’t have a good reason for this change. Still, in a very exciting (or scary) time in US politics so this new evil CAptain America could tie into that in some way.

The books editor Tom Brevoort said of the new change,

“In the zeitgeist of the moment that we’re in, in the middle of sort of a very volatile election cycle where there’s a lot of strange things going on in the world of politics, and the world and the country, it feels kind of appropriate, kind of right timing-wise, that you could get a revelation like this and it not feel out of step with where the nation happens to be in the moment.”

We shall see how this develops, but I already know serious comic book fans are pretty pissed.
