Hackers Rob Bitcoin Mining Site to the Tune of $70 Million

Bitcoin heists are less entertaining than actual bank heists.

It hasn’t been a good week for Bitcoin. First, Steam stops accepting it as a viable payment option. Then, hackers rob NiceHash, a Bitcoin mining site, for about $70 million in the cryptocurrency.

Following the theft on Wednesday, the Slovenia-based NiceHash announced that they would be shutting down for 24 hours to figure out how it all happened. They also offerded the following statement:

Importantly, our payment system was compromised and the contents of the NiceHash bitcoin wallet have been stolen […] We are working to verify the precise number of BTC taken.

According to an interview with Reuters, NiceHash’s Head of Marketing estimated a loss of about 4,700 Bitcoin. Whether that was all they had is unclear. It’s also not yet known who was involved, or if anything shady was going on.

Gee, it’s almost like a currency whose primary value is to be turned in for real money and is based on nothing but code is shockingly insecure.

~I laughed hard. Every single time.~
