I mean, they were throwing free upgrades at everyone, man.
Well, Windows 7 is finally no more, having had its end of life on January 14th. Unfortunately for many of Germany’s government computers, however, they didn’t pull the trigger on the whole upgrade thing. According to Handelsblatt, the Germany Federal Ministry has some 33,000 computers still running Windows 7. Which means they’ll have to pay Microsoft something to the tune of 877,000 in extended security update fees.
Note that, per ZDNet, Microsoft is offering extended security updates to organizations for $50 a machine. Which means that they’re actually going soft on Germany, here; 33,000 machines, at $50 per machine, would normally total $1,650,000. Since half of that number is $825,000, they’re getting a 50% discount, plus something like a $50,000 penalty. All for failing to click a box on several thousand computers.
Then again, we are talking about bureaucracy, in a sense. When push comes to shove, they gota do what they love… even if it’s not a good idea. RIP in peace, Windows 7; you were a good operating system.
