Gaming industry readies itself for possible trade tariffs

Video games, much like most forms of entertainment, are a form of escape. We go to them not only because they are fun, but because they let us live out lives, go on grand adventures and generally do the things we could never to in real life.

All that said, video games are still, for the most part, an expensive hobby for most people. But that hobby, that much-needed escape for some, may just be getting a bit more expensive thanks to possible government intervention.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is currently working on a plan in response to the possibility that newly elected President Donald Trump rolling out tariffs (a tax meant to make imported goods more expensive than domestic goods) on imports from around the world.

The Trump administration has stated that a possible 10% tariff* could be implemented on outside goods which means the upcoming Nintendo Switch console could see a steep increase. This would also apply to all Nintendo games/products as they are all coming in from Japan.

And don’t forget about Sony as they are also a Japanese company that offers a lot more than simply video games. Someone in the Trump administration must be a real Xbox One fan…

A spokesman speaking to gaming news site Polygon** stated that We are looking into the issue and can provide more information shortly.”
