GameStop to Test Out Selling Comics

GameStop

Test starts in ten days.

Previously, James Parker worked at the Hastings chain of stores. And he managed to bring comic into the chain successfully, even though the chain died. And now that he works for GameStop, he plans to do it again, only this time he’ll avoid the pitfalls he ran into last time.

Bleeding Cool recently got hands on some GameStop-related leaks. And said leaks point to GameStop selling comics.

Most of those shown in the leaked screenshots are mostly Marvel properties (Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, etc.). But DC’s Batman and Oni Press’ Rick and Morty comics are also in the fold. Which suggests that they’re going for the cream of the crop as far as what’s popular right now.

Bleeding Cool’s inquiry actually got the following statement out of Parker:

We are indeed getting into comics, as a retail test forum. Comics are often a part of our promotional entertainment industry environment, including video games – we can learn from this tribal knowledge. We have indeed partnered with Diamond to carry a small selection of comics in 40 stores utilizing their new spinner rack. The comics are mostly from Marvel and DC with a focus on key series and titles. This is just a small launch to bring comics to some of our collectibles stores as they fit with the current trend of Collectibles that are performing in the market. Should this prove successful, we may consider rolling out to additional stores in the future but plan to keep it limited to the spinner rack for the foreseeable future. Of course, you can expect to see some exclusive variants from us in the future.

GameStop has been trying to shake up their business model, by stocking collectibles and the like. So it’s not really a surprise that they’d expand on that. And since it’s all being kept to spinner racks, it’s not hard to imagine an initially lean offering. Which ought to keep things in focus, as GameStop has thousands of stores.
