The Cars series has always seemed like the odd man out in the Pixar collection of films. It just never connected with me (and a lot of other people) and it felt clearly marketed at children.
I know that sounds weird, but I’ve always felt Pixar films had some serious underlying themes and situations that adults could really grapple with, while their kids could enjoy a fun and colorful movie.
Then Cars 2 happened and people started to see that even the great Pixar wasn’t perfect. There as no real reason for the sequel to exist outside of selling a bunch of toys, but that is the Disney way, after all.
Now, the trailer for Cars 3 is here and it changes everything. Not only everything about the Cars franchise, but for Pixar as a whole. The trailer is dark, ominous, and will probably shock you with just how adult it is.
Kids are going to lose their shit over what happens to McQueen here, and parents are going to be shocked with the new direction and the films apparent take on become old and obsolete. Sure, the film could turn out to just be another Cars cash-in, but this trailer is a nice start to showing us something special.
The synopsis for the film is as follows:
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
