For once, the copypasta doesn’t apply.
Recently, the Endwalker expansion for Final Fantasy XIV came out, to the delight of many. So many, in fact, that it’s actually caused problems when it comes to players logging into the game. And that’s mostly down to a bug that has plagued the game since the expansion’s release, forcing astronomical queue times, and often leaving the game unplayable to a large number of players.
This isn’t the first time this has happened, though. And they’re using a method that’s worked in the past: temporarily suspending sales of both the starter and complete edition of the game. They’re even going so far as to try and delay deliveries of the physical edition of the game. What’s more, Square Enix will actually stop advertising the game for a short while, at least until the problem is fixed.
Naoki Yoshida, the game’s producer, wrote the following:
Players are currently experiencing extremely long wait times due to the dense concentration of play hours which far exceed our server capacity, especially during the peak times, and so we have decided to temporarily suspend the sale and delivery of FINAL FANTASY XIV Starter Edition and Complete Edition. Additionally, although those with an active subscription are prioritised to log in, Free Trial players are unable to log in outside of late night and early morning hours, and so we will also temporarily suspend new registrations for the Free Trial.
They’re granting extra game time to players as recompense, too; initially, it was 7 days, but they’re bumping it up with an additional 14 days. This applies to all users who own the full version of Final Fantasy XIV as of Tuesday, December 21st, 8:00 GMT. Coincidentally, that date is the same day patch 6.01, which should fix this, will drop.
Square Enix is going to such lengths, because they’ve actually discovered the cause of the 2002 error that’s causing all of this.
In regards to Error 2002 that occurs during login queues, outside of causes related to unstable connections, we have confirmed a bug. This bug was part of a login-related program created back in FFXIV version 1.0, and thanks to the reports and tests carried out by many of our players, we were able to identify the cause of the problem. We apologise for not being able to identify the issue on our end and thank you all for submitting detailed reports regarding this matter.
Although the code for fixing this bug is already prepared, applying the fix will require patching the game client, which will be addressed in Patch 6.01, scheduled for Tuesday, 21 December. As this issue occurs while waiting in the queue for a very long time, we considered releasing the patch ahead of schedule, but in the end decided to include it in Patch 6.01, as there is already a lot of new code in the pipeline for the patch and interrupting the process of verifying them may lead to other bugs. We apologise for the inconvenience and ask for your patience a bit longer.
There is probably a certain irony in such a persistent problem originates from version 1.0 of the game.
