Figment #1 brings the worlds of Marvel and Disney together to bring us a world of fun and imagination.
Figment #1 is the second in the Disney Kingdoms line of comic books and follows our lead as he bends science and imagination. The artwork by Filipe Andrade really stands out and helps bring the world to life with its district styling. The writing in the book also stands out thanks in part to not trying to force content down the readers throats. What we get is a well-paced story that offers just enough to keep the reader engaged and interested in not only what comes next, but what came before.
Our story’s protagonist, Blair is a member of a prestigious Science Academy where some of the worlds foremost minds come together to create wondrous new forms of energy producing technology. Blair has been a stand out since he was a small boy, excelling in the scientific arts beyond his contemporaries.
This not only puts his inventions beyond the understanding of modern man, but beyond the comprehension of his peers. We see Blair deal with a failure of his new machine, the Integrated Mesmonic Converter. Essentially, his new invention is meant to tap into the energy of the mind, thus creating a nearly endless supply of energy to power the world.
It’s a really interesting take with a lot of Steampunk influence throughout the book. As these things though, Blair’s machine goes wrong thanks in part to his own imagination and releases a creature bearing the name of the book’s title, Figment. This purple dragon like creature has a charm that only something straight out of Disney could capture. He fits the perfect mold of many of the past sidekicks that helped many a princess or prince in their day.
Figment #1 just works. It’s a book that clearly shows the amount of work and details in every page in both the writing and artwork. Not only does it serve as a really sting number 1 issue, but it sets up what looks to be a fantastic adventure through ones own wild and unfettered imagination.
There are a lot of times that I find it difficult to grab hold of a new story in a meaningful way, but Figment #1 has managed to do just that. It’s a book that is meant for everyone, not just kids or Disney fans. I can’t wait to read more and am becoming more and more excited about this comic book merger between Disney and Marvel. If they keep bring out great books like these, the entire comic loving populace is going to benefit.
