The Fallout: Nuevo Mexico mod, which aimed to expand the Fallout: New Vegas experience with a new story set in the irradiated wasteland of New Mexico, has been officially cancelled. The project, led by developer Zapshock, faced numerous challenges over the years, including a temporary halt in development earlier in 2024 before briefly resuming. This comes after a trailer for the mod dropped back in October.
In a message posted on the Fallout: Nuevo Mexico Discord server, Zapshock explained the decision to cancel the project. “This project has been my passion, my obsession, and a huge part of my life for years,” they wrote. “I’ve poured thousands of hours into it, late nights, early mornings, and everything in between. I’ve met amazing people along the way, some who’ve become lifelong friends. But as much as I love this project, I need to prioritize my mental health and face reality.”
The cancellation marks the end of a rocky journey for Fallout: Nuevo Mexico. Earlier in 2024, the mod’s YouTube channel was wiped clean, and Discord channels were cleared, pointing to clear signs something was going on. Development was briefly put on hold before resuming a few months later. A reveal trailer in October 2024 reignited hope for fans, showcasing a largescale battle in Mexico City, which the team described as the mod’s largest hub area.
It seems that the small team of fewer than four developers struggled with the workload of a project this size, and that’s not even mentioning the financial pressures involved. Zapshock also highlighted the personal toll the project took, not only on themselves but also on contributors to the project.
Despite these efforts, the project has now been shelved for good. Zapshock expressed gratitude to the community for their support, saying, “To everyone who supported this project, from the kind words, the feedback, the excitement, to just believing in what we were trying to create, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
While the cancellation is a disappointment for fans, the dedication and creativity of the Fallout: Nuevo Mexico mod team remains a testament to the passion of the modding community. For now, the wasteland of New Mexico will remain unexplored until another team picks up the mantle to provide New Vegas fans another adventure in the wasteland.
