Faith #4

Faith is one of the comics coming from Valiant that I recently have fallen in love with. It has a simple and easy to follow kind of story and connects so much that it feels like an eternity between issues. It’s light and entertaining fare, full of good ideas and a style all its own.

“Faith is one of the most charismatic heroes in all of comics.”

In terms of story, the general idea works pretty well here, with a more humoristic sense of originality regarding the classical comic concept of the “evil clone,” and the subsequent conflict the comes with it and the hero. It was great while it lasted, although it ends pretty quickly, but I loved what the team gave us.

It was a very fast and entertaining read that’s easy for all readers to follow. Faith isn’t so elaborate as some major comics out there, which I’m really thankful for (sometimes we all need something simpler once in a while,) and not as fast paced as you might think.  but it has such a catchy script that didn’t let me take away my eyes off the page.

I had a few small problems with parts of the narration. I wasn’t always sure which Faith was speaking at times, and I’d still have some doubts if it wasn’t for that end that clears things up. It’s something I’m still trying to accept, as the narration itself was promising for future issues.

Since this time around we don’t really get any clue of what will happen next, it leaves readers excited about what next in store for our heroine. I think I saw something about Hillary Clinton making an appearance. Not sure how to feel about this, but I guess we’ll have to wait a little to discover what it is about.

As always, Faith #4 is fresh with the art and the coloring, with light tones throughout almost all of the pages. I feel like they gave a calmer overall look to the whole issue, matching the pre-fighting pages, and changing dramatically for the action. This flow works really well and I hope it continues.

Both the inking and panel distribution had something special this time, and while I’m not really sure what it was exactly, it made the book a much more easy and fluid read. The quality helped to get the reader more into the story and feel like you were part of the crowd in Faith #4.

There are a couple of panels that don’t play out well for our girl Faith, showing a very unattractive side of her that’s sort of out of tune with the rest of the page. Maybe it wasn’t on purpose or I’m just seeing something that isn’t there, but she looks so good in so many of the panels that these seem out of place.

The best part of the art were the “special effects” for Faith’s power. The parts are highlighted strongly among the more simple art. They stand out really well, but don’t distract from what’s going on. The style is still the same, just more pronounced  and it works perfectly for the occasion.

Things are working as they should, and maybe it’s too soon to say it, but it looks like Faith #4 could be the end of our introduction and the beginning of the real adventure with our charismatic heroine!
