Failed RetroVGS Console Rebrands Itself As Coleco Chameleon

COLECO Chameleon

The ongoing saga of the RetroVGS continues today as we get word that the console has re-branded itself as the COLECO Chameleon. Well, we know this as the same people behind the failed RetroVGS are involved, as well as the team using the same Atari Jaguar shells and third-party controller. The press release that was sent out makes no mention of the previous RetroVGS, sweeping the entire thing under the rug and plugging this as an “All-New” console from COLECO.

Chris Cardillo, a partner in COLECO stated, “Mark [Thomann] and I are excited to work hand-in-hand with Retro Video Game Systems, Inc. in the launch of the COLECO Chameleon.  It’s ironic that a new ‘retro’ video-game system would actually revolutionize and revitalize the COLECO brand.”

Retro Video Game Systems, Inc. President Mike Kennedy added, “The COLECO Chameleon is a love-letter to all the classic cartridge based gaming systems that came before it and we love the fact it will succeed COLECO’s successful Telstar and Colecovision product lines. It will take gamers and their families back to a simpler time where games were all about great gameplay and fun factor.”

We don’t get any word on the specs for the COLECO Chameleon, although we can bet that they will pretty identical to what the RetroVGS was offering up. The only change we see –outside of the COLECO name– is that they have dropped the standard Atari pin controller ports in favor of USB ports. This of course is up for debate as the unit is still only a render.

The only solid new information on offer is that the COLECO Chameleon will launch in 2016 and will also be demonstrated at Toy Fair New York 2016, February 13-16. Strangely enough, even with apparent support from COLECO the Chameleon looks to be looking to launch yet another crowdfunding campaign this time via Kickstarter.
