Here we go.
At their F8 conference, Facebook announced a new feature: Secret Crush. The feature helps users of Facebook Dating’s features choose up to 9 friends to express interest in. Think of it this way; you’re hand-picking the 9 people that’ll probably be swiping left on you.
How it works: if you get added as someone’s secret crush, you get a notification that says “A friend added you as a secret crush.” If you then add that user as a crush, their name will be revealed, and you’ll be matched. But if you don’t, they’ll remain forever alone anonymous. The feature is only going to be rolled out in countries that already have Facebook Dating, though, including the likes of Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Mexico and Thailand, as well as a number of newly added South American and Asian countries.
The edge they hope to have over regular dating sites is the fact that you already know the people in question. On the flip side, they’re not exactly the first to this particular concept. One of their old competitors, Friendster, had a fairly similar feature going back to 2012. And GoodCrush, launched at Princeton University in 2007, was much the same.
That said, if you can’t imagine the ways the feature could be used to mess with people, you might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.
The feature won’t be worth much worrying if you live in the U.S., though, since Facebook dating isn’t available here yet. It’s currently restricted to the handful of countries that have Facebook dating. Oh well, guess we’ll all just have to wait to mess with the lonely, eh?
