Edward Snowden’s Haven App

Did you ever have the feeling you’re being watched?

Look, I’m not a huge fan of Edward Snowden. I’m sure he would say that what he did was worth it, and necessary. I’d probably disagree, specifically with his execution of the whole thing. Though he did get a massive blowjob from Oliver Stone, so there’s that.

But I digress. Snowden has partnered with The Guardian Project, the Freedom of the Press Foundation to develop an app that makes an Android Smartphone into a handy surveillance device for the hunted.  The app, Haven, can record unexpected sounds, notice differences in ambient light, and make note of whether the device has been picked up or tampered with. The camera can even be used as a motion tracker. The app can even be configured to let you know when these things happen, either via text or Signal, in addition to logging them locally.

Which might not seem especially useful, considering it does nothing to stop perpetrators from stealing your stuff, setting a trap, etc. But if you’re, say, an activist living in a place that’s very hostile to activists like, say, Columbia, it might actually help to save your life. Which might just be why the app isn’t available for Apple devices (yet, at the least). Or, maybe, it’s just the best baby monitor you’ll ever have. Either way, you can probably find some use for Haven, even if it’s not the intended purpose.
