It’s safe to say that Battlefield 2042 hasn’t been doing too well; at least, it’s far from what EA expected for it. And while the technical issues in DICE’s latest installment in the franchise are slowly being patched, it’s still not getting the playerbase it could. Part of that is likely due to a lack of content, but its not going to right itself by throwing a bunch of cosmetics or microtransactions at the wall.
For reference, here’s how it’s doing over on Steam Charts:
And here’s what the top 10 looks like as I write this:
Of special note are numbers 3, 7, and 9. Yu-Gi-Oh is a card game. Monster Hunter Rise, which, despite the fact that I love Monster Hunter dearly, does not have the same potential playerbase a military shooter has. Both of those just released this month, and have multiple times the players, on PC, that Battlefield 2042 has. But perhaps the most damning is number 7, Team Fortress 2; a game released in the late-2000’s which hasn’t had a meaningful update in years, is beating Battlefield 2042 at nearly 7 times the active players. More people are playing Battlefield V than are playing 2042. That’s really gotta sting.
So it’s not much of a surprise to hear that EA is considering going free-to-play. This, of course, comes from insider Tom Henderson:
To summarize, Henderson claims that EA is considering making a portion of the game free-to-play; while it’s not clear which part, the bets are on Portal or Hazard Zone. Portal is considered more likely, as it is the better draw of the two. And, as Henderson states, EA’s next earnings call isn’t too far off; it’s supposed to take place February 1st. And it’s possible that any plans for the game will at least see discussion there.
