Yes, this time, it seems to be true. E3 is now dead.
The trade show, which had been running since 1995, has finally ended its run. It’s not much of a surprise, really; the past several years were marred by both the pandemic, as well as attempts to maintain relevance as major developers pulled out. The coup de grâce, in retrospect, was likely losing the Los Angeles Convention Hall as a venue. It also didn’t help that, after that attempt to do a digital event in 2021, they just never managed to get things together again.
The ESA (the governing body behind the expo) broke the news yesterday, saying the following in an emailed statement:
After more than two decades of serving as a central showcase for the U.S. and global video game industry, ESA has decided to end E3.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, we stick E3 into the Earth’s crust.
