Disney is Buying 20th Century Fox Studios and Networks

Now they can finally get that Namor movie going.

Rumor has become reality. Disney is buying Fox’s studios and channels in a deal that will probably go down as one of the largest of the decade. Fox’s news cable channel, Fox Sports, and Fox’s broadcast television channel will remain with Rupert Murdoch.

But their extensive catalog of movie and television studios (and the properties they entail, like the rights to X-Men and Fantastic 4 Avatar, Alien, The Simpsons, as well as distribution rights to Star Wars Episode IV, and so on), majority control of Hulu, FX cable networks, as well as the parts of UK’s Sky television that Fox was in the process of acquiring (assuming that’s successful), in addition to those it already owned. And $13.7 billion in debt, but the house the mouse built can probably deal with that.

The less obvious value of the merger is what it means for Disney’s proposed streaming service. It now has a much larger depth and breadth of content available than just traditional Disney-owned properties. They now have another 82 years worth of 20th Century Fox movies to draw from, not to mention their television library.

The deal will supposedly go down for $52.4 billion in stock (though that number might change). Now the only real question is whether the deal will pass federal regulations, or if Disney will have to divest themselves of some lesser properties to get the deal to go through.
