Well that sort of blindsided me…
I wouldn’t blame anyone for not knowing, because I sure didn’t realize it myself, but apparently Ryan Grantham, known for playing the lead in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and more recently Jeffrey on CW’s Riverdale, killed his mother back in March 2020. The trial for that crime started in June of this year, and concluded today. He has been sentenced to life in prison. That said, he is eligible for parole in 14 years.
The actor shot and killed his mother in March 2020 while she was playing piano at their home. The day after, he allegedly loaded up his car with 3 guns, a number of molotov cocktails, ammunition for said guns, some camping gear, and directions to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s home. He planned to kill Trudeau, but instead drove to Hope, British Columbia, before turning around with a plan to commit a mass shooting at either his school, Simon Fraser University, or at Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge.
Ultimately, he drove himself to the Vancouver Police and turned himself in. He was then charged with second-degree murder.
His attorney, Chris Johnson, told NBC that his client previously made a statement to the court expressing remorse for what he did. Johnson claims that at the time of the murder, Grantham was dealing with untreated mental illnesses including major depressive order. According to a psychiatrist, Grantham killed his mother so that she wouldn’t have to see what he was then planning to do. As Johnson later said about the case:
It’s unusual circumstances, for sure. I think the result was a fair result given everything that occurred.
