Developers Prefer Piracy Of Their Games Over Players Using G2A

Limewire may be dead, but here are their pirates.

G2A is a grey market for game keys. And, boy, have they pissed off developers in the past. The likes of both Gearbox and the (much beloved around here) tinyBuild have put the reseller on blast in the past. And they’ve now managed to piss off even more developers.

Mike Rose of No More Robots tweeted out his displeasure in finding that Google searches for the publisher’s games immediately bring up Google ads for the site. And when people buy those games through such links, the actual developers make no money. Such that he’d prefer you just pirate it rather than give G2A money for their bullshit.

He’s far from the only one.

It does seem an extreme point to take. Not to mention legally dangerous for developers; doing everything possible to protect your IP is the reason all those fan games get DMCA’s, after all. At the same time, G2A’s antics tend to leave the developers and publishers holding the bag; when a key isn’t working, or has been deactivated, it’s their problem to deal with, not G2A’s. So in a roundabout way, a simple cutting of losses makes sense. Still, if you want to support these developers but you’re strapped for cash, maybe just wait for a sale, eh?
