The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind

I got to play around a bit with the indie 3DS game The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind at E3 on day 2. It’s a charming little puzzle game with a European animation aesthetic. And the dev team are some of the nicest people I’ve met at the show.

The game revolves around your ability to slide rooms around on a grid in the hopes of lining two doors up. It doesn’t feel natural initially; when you play games a lot, you tend not to think of rooms as anything else but a solid, immovable objects.

But within a few minutes, you get the hang of it, and it practically becomes second nature. To finish a level, you need to collect a key, and optionally a puzzle piece that likely has a more important effect in the full release.

While none of the levels I played before I had to move on were more than 3 rooms, they quickly introduced new concepts like multiple levels within a room, and trap doors that allow you to move laterally downward. And even then its easy to forget that even with the ability to move rooms at your disposal, you can also still jump to clear obstacles.

I’ll definitely check this one out when I get the chance in the coming weeks.
