Dell No Longer Sells Certain Alienware PCs In Six States

Dell

Dude, you’re NOT getting a Dell.

Due to new power consumption regulations adopted by six states, as well as British Columbia in Canada, Dell will no longer ship certain models of their gaming PC’s to those locations.

Notably, per PC Gamer, these are mostly different configurations of Dell’s Alienware Aurora R12 and Aurora R10 gaming PCs. These specific configurations state up front that they cannot be shipped to California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington, as well as British Columbia.

Once again, Muta goes over all of this better than most:

Essentially, this isn’t just concerning PCs; rather, the legislation is focused on the energy consumption of all idle electronics, including most home appliances such as air conditioners. But PCs are the focus, as they use a lot of energy even when they’re idling and not being used.

A comment Dell made to The Register:

Yes, this was driven by the California Energy Commission (CEC) Tier 2 implementation that defined a mandatory energy efficiency standard for PCs – including desktops, AIOs and mobile gaming systems. This was put into effect on July 1, 2021. Select configurations of the Alienware Aurora R10 and R12 were the only impacted systems across Dell and Alienware.

It’s worth noting that the hyperbolic headlines seen around the internet regarding gaming PCs are not true. As a matter of fact, if you’re building your own PC, these regulations probably don’t even apply;they’re seemingly focused towards prebult machines, which make up the larger part of the market. What’s more, you’d probably be better off to do so, as Dell’s not been getting terribly high marks recent of late when it comes to customer satisfaction.

That all being said, you would probably do well to enable the power saving features of you machine regardless. You can save a pretty nice chunk of cash that way.
