David Hayter Working On Show Based On American McGee’s Alice

American McGee's Alice

“We’re all mad here, Snake”

You may or may not be familiar with American McGee’s Alice series. Based on the Lewis Carol books, they take a somewhat more twisted look at the character and setting. You’d be forgiven for not knowing this, however, as it’s basically impossible to get the second game without Origin (thanks EA), and the first one… see Civvie’s video on that below. The hoops they send you through.

So anyway, David Hayter (yes, that David Hayter) is writing and producing a series based on American McGee’s Alice series. Which probably sound weird to you if you don’t know that, aside from Metal Gear Solid, David Hayter’s had a fairly long career as an actor, writer, and director, among other things. Thanks to 0080: War in the Pocket, most who watched the dub can’t hear the word “hamburger” without thinking of him. That was a terrible joke and I’m not sorry.

Anyway, as Hayter told The Hollywood Reporter about the project:

American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns game series is a groundbreaking reimagining of the classic tale. It takes you into the heart of a corrupted Wonderland and throws light into shadowy corners the world has never seen. I am beyond excited to bring this world of madness and wonder to a global audience.

Anyway, it seems the series picks up after Alice returns through the looking glass. Her parents are dead, her house is burned down, and she’s in a mid-to-late 1800’s asylum. Things aren’t good for her, and when the White Rabbit shows up, they’re not going to improve by much, if at all. Because she’s going to have to fight through Wonderland to get out. Per a statement by American McGee on the project:

David Hayter brings imagination, experience, and stealth sneaking skills gained through successful missions in film, TV, and video games — a unique combination sure to make this adventure into Wonderland a successful one for the franchise and the fans. I am excited to be working with him and know the Alice fans will welcome him with mad affection

Radar Pictures, partnering with Abandon Entertainment for the production, managed to get the rights to do a series based on the games from EA, who was probably too busy disemboweling a studio people actually like to really be all that contentious about it. McGee is in the loop in an undefined capacity, but is likely fairly busy with Alice: Asylum and Oz: Adventures, the latter being based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz series. There’s no announced broadcaster for the series as of yet.
