Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII was probably the only Compilation of Final Fantasy VII game (or even part of the entire compilation) that was actually good. So it was no surprise to me that it would get a multiplatform remaster: Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII – Reunion. The really surprising part was that they replaced Rick Gomez as Zack, and no I will not let this go (even if this is the same actor they went with in FFVII Remake).
But that’s not the only thing people noticed. Turns out someone pulled an “Allan please add details” and didn’t realize that the painting they put in had a Getty Images watermark in it.
As a matter of fact, the painting in question appears three times in the game, cropped from the top to fit a frame, all with the watermark in plain view. The first appearance is in the Shinra mansion in chapter 8. It then appears at least another 2 times in the same area. According to Kotaku, the piece in question is Ludgate Circus, London, 1881, by artist John Crowther. Meaning, yes, they did crop a portrait-oriented painting into a landscape orientation.
That said, this is obviously a mistake; either the image was a placeholder that wasn’t removed, or they forgot to license it for use. This isn’t exactly the first time something like this has happened in a Square Enix game, either. Those with good memory might recall the time the arnold watermark popped up in the Kingdom Hearts III version of Frozen‘s Let It Go (coincidentally, the video I posted with it edited the entire song out thanks to Disney copyright). Regardless, it’s hard to imagine they won’t patch this eventually, as they did with KHIII, so either play Crisis Core – Final Fantasy VII – Reunion sooner than later to see it in its natural habitat, or buy physical and don’t let your system update it.
