Cowboy Bebop’s Live-Action, American TV Series

You read that right. Cowboy Bebop is getting a live-action, American television series, courtesy of Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios and Midnight Radio.

“We are excited to work with Sunrise in bringing this beloved anime to the U.S. and global marketplace as a live-action series,” said Adelstein. “The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide, and with the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live action version will have an incredible impact today.”

You might know Cowboy Bebop as “that one anime that everybody likes even if they don’t like anime”. Like every Shinichiro Watanabe series after it, it has spectacular animation and a soundtrack like auditory sex except you’re having it (See the opening, posted above).

That said, live-action anime is a dicey proposition; most such American projects have either fallen short of the mark, or simply failed to escape development hell (*cough cough* Akira *cough cough*). Even Japanese adaptations tend to be… not good. That said, the people that are to be responsible for this adaptation at least seem to have their heats in the right place.

“Bitch, I’m smarter than you.” Sunrise

Will the cast share the same passive hatred of each other? Will the actor they choose to play Spike be able to do the cigarette trick? Will it feature a magic forever 10-year-old boy aging like Walter Donovan after getting shot with a science bullet? I don’t know. But the series does have the blessing of Sunrise, so fingers crossed, I guess?
