The most scrutable series I know.
While both Discovery and Picard were on display at CBS’ Star Trek Panel, one thing there was a little different. Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy set in the Star Trek universe, named after the Next Gen episode.
Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty) serves as both co-creator and executive producer. They also had several of the main cast on stage, in addition to executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin. Tawny Newsome (Ensign Mariner) and Jack Quaid (Ensign Boimler) were present, alongside Jerry O’Connell (who voices Commander Jack Ransom) as the panel moderator.
Rounding out the cast are Ensign Tendi (Noel Wells) who greatly enjoys the blood and guts that are involved in sickbay work, and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), a less than La Forge-level engineer who’s a bit clumsy with his cyborg interfaces. There are also bridge crew characters that act like it’s their show; Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), a traditional captain, Commander Ransom, described as “California Riker”, Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and chief medical officer Dr. T’Ana (Gillian Vigman).
Kurtzman shared the story of McMahan’s pitch for the series:
“I want to do a show about the guy who brings the yellow cartridge to the back of the replicator so that a banana comes out the front.” Kurtzman’s response? “I need to get you an office.”
Star Trek: Lower Decks is set for a 10 episode first season on CBS All Access in 2020.
