Contract negotiations, eh?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from Star Trek 4. They were in negotiations to be in the film, but reportedly, things fell apart at the table, and both the actors and the companies (Paramount and Skydance) have walked away from the talks.
It really all boils down to money. Pine and Hemsworth felt they deserved more given their current A-list status. The companies refused to budge, deciding that a more usual Star Trek sort of pay scale was called for. In both actor’s cases, they contended that they already had a deal in place, and the studio is reneging on it. And, in Pine’s case at least, that’s likely true; reportedly, he made a deal with the studio when he signed up for Star Trek Beyond for the next film as well.
The studio, on the other hand, points to the performance of the films. Namely, Star Trek Beyond (which was the best of the 3, if you’d bothered to watch it, you filthy peasants), which only grossed $343 million globally, on a $190million budget. And some estimate that the studio actually lost money on that one.
Dealmaking with the other cast members was reportedly to follow the success of the primaries. As to what the studio will do now is anyone’s guess.
