I wanna sample some “GO!“‘s.
Maybe you want to get into sample-based music. Or, maybe you have a young relative getting into music. In which case, CHOMPI might be the answer to your needs.
CHOMPI is, as its creators put it in the video description:
…a quirky, Tape Music instrument inviting you into the magical world of sound design. With its one of a kind sampling engine, unique multi-FX and tape style looper, CHOMPI is ready for immediate FUN. So whether you’ve been playing music for years, or are just starting your sonic journey, this device will quickly become your new favorite buddy.
Or, as one of the comments on the video points out, it’s a simple polyphonic sampler. Which is not a bad thing; The current least-expensive option capable of everything CHOMPI is, The Teenage Engineering OP-1 (which does a lot more, but I digress), would set you back anywhere from $1,000-$2100, depending on if you’re okay buying used. CHOMPI, presumably, will be a bit less painful for your wallet. As far as devices that operate in the exact range of features and simplicity of use as CHOMPI, well, it seems the cheese stands alone. While there are a number of similar devices, they’re either aimed at professionals, difficult to learn to use, or expensive; sometimes all 3.
CHOMPI, on the other hand, is laid out simply, easy to learn, and will only run you $499. Which, for this sort of thing, puts it around entry level; anything cheaper lacks features, and most comparable devices are more expensive and more complex.
Regardless, the Kickstarter campaign isn’t open yet, but you won’t have to wait long. The CHOMPI campaign launches this month, on March 28th. You can find it here.
