Twitch saw a huge amount of use last month in China. And yet, the streaming platform is now blocked in the country. And since China is super thorough when it blocks something, there is literally no way for Chinese users to access the site. Neither by web browser nor app.
Twitch was the third most downloaded app on the iOS app store in China last month. The reason why was mostly due to the Asian Games; and eSports event that Chinese viewers primarily watched on Twitch.
Nobody knows the exact reason that the Chinese government decided to block Twitch. Abacus hypothesizes that it could be the government’s method of cracking down on China’s problems with gaming addiction. Or that it may be due to the fact that such a wide, free speech platform was considered a risk.
The sad thing is that we probably won’t find out.
