DOOM is the father of the FPS, but it also helped making multiplayer gaming a thing way back when. While I never played DOOM via the old dial-up modem, I did spend a great many night playing Duke 3D via telephone line with my friend on a few miles away.
Still, DOOM did so much for the genre,and while the jury is still out on wether the newest game in the series can make a lasting impact, it sure looks to be a lot of fun from what we’ve seen.
