There is trouble in the land of X, as it’s been reported by The Wrap that Channing Tatum is leaving the upcoming production of the X-Men spinoff film, Gambit. This is all pretty shocking news as only a few weeks back Tatum was onstage at San Diego Comic-Con with the rest of the Fox side Marvel actors. No word yet on why he left (is leaving) the role, of which he was set to star, but as filming is set to begin this October, the studio is in a scramble to figure things out.
The Gambit film had locked down its director in Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and is scheduled for an October 7, 2016 release. This news now puts the entire project in jeopardy as Tatum was also signed on as a producer on the film, so his connections with the project ran deep. Gambit was slatted to follow up both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse in the Fox Marvel lineup.
(UPDATE: 8-1-15)
The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Channing Tatum has finalized a deal to play the lead in the soon to begin shooting Gambit film (the one about the X-Man character, not about us.). Sources last week said that the star was dropping from the production, and while they did “hit a sensitive spot in negotiations,” a deal was worked out. The new reports indicate that backend compensation was a major sticking point during these negotiations.
