CES 2022: Razer’s Project Sophia Makes Your Desk Into A Modular Computer Interface

Prepare your digits.

Razer’s going for it this year. Their newest concept is Project Sophia, which seeks to stuff a modular desktop computer into a desk. For point of reference, think the LCARS interface from Star Trek Next Gen, except instead of clean lines and aesthetically pleasing shapes and colors, it’s RGB Gamer stuff. Your poor eyeballs, there ain’t enough Retinax V in the world.

This isn’t the first time Razer’s had such aspirations. 2014 saw Project Christine, which featured a modular PC made from Jenga-like bricks (sadly shelved after it came to life and started killing people). 2020’s Tomahawk took a similar, yet sleeker approach.

Project Sophia, however, features thirteen different swappable module slots. Those slots can fit everything, from the useful, like pen tablets, sound mixers, monitors for your PC’s internal components; to the slightly less so, like a mug heater.

Razer imagines the PC being built into a magnetically attached chassis, allowing users to upgrade their PC as they like. The desk itself comes with a 65-77 inch OLED panel. Oh, yeah, and their Chroma lighting system, because it’s a gaming desk, you know?

Granted, it’s mostly just a nifty concept; there’s no prototype, and there probably never will be. It’s the kind of thing that sounds good on paper, but quickly turns into a logistical nightmare once you actually try to make it. Then again, Razer’s business model does operate on selling you as many RGB things as possible…
