Ought to make one heck of a reader.

Last year, TCL showed off their NXTPAPER screen tech; a color, paper-like screen that could render video at fairly high frame rates. This year, though, not only is the screen tech present, it’s going to be in the company’s similarly-named NXTPAPER; an 8.88 inch Android tablet incorporating that screen.

Interestingly, the panel doesn’t incorporate a backlight; it’s a low-power reflective LCD that “reuses natural light”. Per TCL, it’s 36 percent thinner than typical LCDs with higher contrast, and 65% better battery efficiency, as well as no flicker or “harmful blue light”. The tablet itself weighs in at 310 grams.

Essentially, in well-lit conditions, you can use the tablet as normal. In low light, however, you need some sort of external light source, like a lamp or reading light. To that end, TCL is also selling a clip on lamp that you can use to illuminate the screen.

Aside from the new screen, the NXTPAPER is a relatively standard tablet. It runs Android 10, has a 1,440 x 1,080 resolution and a Mediatek MT8768e processor. 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and allowance for microSD up to 256GB. It’s capable of LTE connectivity, and most importantly, it comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Moreover, due to that nifty screen, you’ll get a full day’s use out of the tablets 5,500mAh battery.

And, if you’re a fan of digital paper, you wont have to wait long to get your hands on it. The NXTPAPER launches in Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America for €349 in April this year.
