I really didn’t want to make this two separate posts, guys. Let’s talk some casting news that will surely piss a lot of people off!
First up, Josh Gad (Frozen, the upcoming The Wedding Ringer) has been cast as Roger Ebert in Russ & Roger Go Beyond, about the making of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Ebert wrote the script for Beyond when he was just 27, and the film was helmed by famed softcore filmmaker Russ Meyer, who will be played by Will Ferrell. I know Gad is really divisive as of late, but you can count me in for this one. Done right, this could be a very funny movie.
Second, and this will really piss off the anime fans, Scarlett Johansson has been cast in the lead role in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. She’ll play the main character, Motoko Kusanagi, although that name will, uh, probably change in rewrites.
You’re gonna hear a lot of griping about this, the same way you probably heard people bitching about the adaptations of Akira and Cowboy Bebop, both of which never materialized anyway. Don’t pay it too much mind, though; girls who like anime are generally stuck in seventh grade, and most guys who like anime can’t think of a quicker way to tell the world “I want to fuck a 12-year-old.”
Thanks to Uproxx for the heads up.
