Captain America: Road to War #1

Captain America: Road to War #1

Days are quickly passing by, some already have the date marked on the calendar, waiting for Captain America: Civil War. This is the movie where nearly the whole of the Cinematic Marvel Universe will collide with itself. A single team divided will be making their stand on the big screens.

Seems quiet logical that, as it was first a comic arc, there would be a new comic tie-in with this new film, one that serves as a prequel to the movie, a bridge between it and the past one. And that’s just what we get in Captain America: Road to War, which first issue of a mini-series event leading to the film.

Vision, Falcon, War Machine and the Scarlet Witch are training hard so they can to be true superheros in Cap and Black Widow’s eyes. The duo is watching the progress that is being made, but even with all the training they haven’t yet had their first official mission yet. The question is how will they be as a real team?

We get the answer to that question in this issue. Ultron is defeated, but his remains are still in the wild, and some people have plans about how to use them for gain. These “New Avengers” must face this threat the best they can to prove they can really use their powers for good, and are really worth the training the better-known heroes have given them. I won’t say anything more plot-wise trying not to ruin your reading experience.

The script is very well laid out. Will Corona Pilgrim did a really good job with this issue, and the same can be said about the art. There is a lot of great inking with easy-reading lettering, and great coloring. It does bother me the fact that the characters don’t look quite the same as in the movies since this comic is based in the cinematic universe. The best part are the single-panel pages, where we can see amazing illustrations featuring these characters we love so much. I’m a Scarlet Witch fanboy, so just imagine my face when I saw her featured and in action here! You can be sure you’ll do the same if she’s your favorite hero among this group of promising newbies.

For hardcore fans, there’s a little surprise nobody told me about: Tales of Suspense #58, an old-school comic written by Stan Lee himself. In this issue we see Iron Man and Captain America fighting against each other, but for a reason completely different than in Civil War.

Seems like Marvel has a really good bridge between Age of Ultron and Civil War. It’s a fun book and works well as a movie tie-in book, something that often is an afterthought. This one is worth keeping an eye on as the series continues!
